38 Students translating ideas into motion dealing with Social issues such as Domestic Abuse, Friendship, Cultural Exchange, and much more.

Any piece of literature that has a High School Principal has to be a good story - extreme tragedy or hilarious comedy.  I will let you be the judge on this one.

Tickets are still available for this Main Stage production with opening night December 1, 2 and 3 with curtain at 7 pm.  There will be a Sunday matinee with curtain at 2:00 pm.

Southwest BLAST Partner Avenues for Homeless Youths

BLAST (Being Loving and Sharing Together) Days: Month of December

AVENUES for Homeless Youth:  Helping Homeless Youth Move from SURVIVING TO THRIVING

Since 1994, Avenues has been helping homeless youth.  Over 4,000 youth are homeless and on their own every night in MN.  Avenues operates six programs in the Twin Cities that support more than 300 youth every year with shelter, transitional housing, jobs, education, and other services.  Avenues’ has a committed and caring staff and volunteers to support the youth 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Each youth works with a team of case managers, mental health therapists, nurses, education specialists, youth counselors and community partners.  Avenues, also, sponsors host home programs which match youth to live with host families in their homes throughout Mpls and the suburbs. 

We can help support Avenues through financial support and the donation of supplies. Donations can be brought to Southwest or given to your student to bring to SW.  Please see a wish list of supplies and further information on Avenues webpage:  http://avenuesforyouth.org/

Robtics Move on to State

I thought you might be interested that the "Rubies", a FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics team consisting of six 9th and 10th grade Southwest students, had a tremendous showing at a qualifying tournament in Eden Prairie this past Saturday.

The team's robot went undefeated in preliminary rounds, giving them the opportunity to lead an alliance into the playoffs. Their alliance then defeated all comers in the playoffs to become tournament champions.

The Rubies also won the first place "Inspire" award, given to the top overall team based on outreach, design, build, their engineering notebook, and judging interviews. It's rare for the same team to win both the Inspire and robot rounds.

Based on this result they'll compete at the State tournament in February (after another preliminary tournament in North Branch in January).

The Rubies consist of 10th graders Izzy Mack, Ava Kian, Isabella Kemling, Adelaide Fanner and 9th graders Rachel Springer and Mitra Kian.

Southwest Is OPEN and Driving & Walking is Slow and Slippery

Be Careful Around Southwest

The school is open on Wednesday.

Driving and walking conditions are passable but caution is advised.  The side streets and walkways are wet, slippy and slush covered.  Be careful driving, parking and walking.

Southwest Swim and Dive Finishes at State

The Southwest Girls Swim and Dive team wrapped up their season at the state meet on Friday evening.  Coming into the meet the team  was sitting at 18th place with 37.5 points based on seed times from the sectional meet. After the weekend the team cracked the top ten with an 8th place finish and 96 points.

In the process many school records along with multiple MPS All-Time records were broken. The 200 Medley Relay (Amelia Baxley 11th, Maya Knutson 12th, Peyton D'Emanuele 9th, Elle Niebuhr 9th) broke the all-time MPS record with a time of 1:47.73 coming in at 7th place earning all state honors. 

In the 50 freestyle Peyton D'Emanuele went 23.99 for a new all-time MPS record finishing 11th. Peyton also won the consolation heat at 9th place in the 100 butterfly, :57.66, with a new SW record. 

Senior Maya Knutson came in at :52.47 in the 100 freestyle, a new all-time MPS record, good for 14th place. 

The 200 freestyle relay team of Eve Biederman 11th, Madeline Peak 12th, Maya Knutson 12th, Elle Niebuhr finished 11th with a new all-time MPS record of 1:38.77. 

Junior Amelia Baxley swam her way into the finals finishing 7th in the 100 backstroke earning all state honors. 

To cap off the evening the 400 Freestyle Relay of Maya Knutson, Amelia Baxley, Elle Niebuhr, 

Peyton D'Emanuele finished 4th with a new all-time MPs record of 3:32.20.

These girls and their teammates worked extremely hard throughout the year while focused on their schoolwork as well. The section team GPA was 3.70, academic silver standard as denoted by the coaches association.

While our season is complete and we will dearly miss our seniors, we are very excited to see what next season brings. The team is really a positive example of what goes right in high school athletics for the Minneapolis Public Schools.

While using a quality lock is the best prevention, a good way to help recover a stolen bike and prosecute the thieves  is to register the bike.  

Bicycle registration can be done in 2 ways in the City of Minneapolis

1.  The bike owner can call 311 with your contact information, bicycle serial number (located on bottom of crank shaft or on the fork supporting the handle bars), and other basic information. 

You only need to register once unless you need to update contact information or bicycle details or

2. Go on line to http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/bicycles   to register.

Grace Abbot of Southwest High School is a YoungArts Finalist in Visual Arts and will Participate in 36th Annual National YoungArts Week in Miami, January 8 – 15, 2017.  

Abbot Joins 691 Outstanding Teenage Artists from 40 States and will receive awards, mentorship and professional development opportunities.
