So we are adding a minute to passing time. Starting Monday, Oct. 8 there will be 5 full minutes between classes. Gone is the excuse for being late to class.
The long term solution is to extend the school day by moving start time to 8:00 am. That is not going to happen this year but probably will be the case for the 2013-14 school year. A year late to benefit your child but that is way it is.
The bell schedule starting Monday is:

Period 3 10:14 - 11:01
Period 4 11:06 - 11:53
Period 5 11:58 - 1:16

Homecoming Pep Fest is now Legendary
Homecoming Pep Fest -- great job Student Council and all the teams and the entire student body!!
A little chilly but lots of cheering and excitement. Dancing by all and another homecoming pep fest is in the history books and part of the legends.

Friday Pepfest and Homecoming
Nice start to a fall day. Feels like a great football, soccer, tennis, cross country, swimming, volleyball day.
Pep fest is at the stadium this afternoon with all the yelling and screaming that goes with being that age. WE attempt to establish new traditions but there are a couple knuckleheads who hang on to the belief that these activities are an excuse to be unkind to 9th graders. That is one I wish their parents never started.
Homecoming game, parade and dance are on Saturday. It really a day of celebration of the high school experience. Homecoming is almost universal in US education institutions. It is its own rite of passage. Most of the memories connected with homecoming are pleasant. We certainly hope those continue.
We want our kids to be safe and responsible. You might have a little chat about things. Does your son/daughter clearly understand your expectations. We want our kids to have fun. We do not want a single mistake to ruin a life.
Homecoming is full of memories. Think of your own and then have that conversation with your daughter/son.

warmer temperatures help
The building is not freezing. But it is also not freezing outside. We love our winter but the long fall is okay also.
Yes we are quickly working on our boilers because we can keep the snow away for a while. But in the meantime the building is a comfortable temperature. All the active bodies definitely help. Many of our students are dressed in layers and some of that has to do with the forecast. Most of our costumes for the day have to do with homecoming week.
Today is Classy day which is a secret code day for school class colors. Tomorrow is school spirit day and that means purple. All part of the high school experience.

Sweater Season - Boiler Issues
Greetings: I regret to announce that it may be cool in the building over the
next day or 2 or 5. One of our boilers is leaking steam, and the other
has some welding to be finished. Please be aware of this and bring
a sweater or sweatshirt or jacket to help keep you warm. Advise your
students to do the same. Hopefully this issue will be resolved quickly.
We will continue to monitor the building and areas within the building.

Mid-Terms Finished
This is the start of the sixth week of the school year. We are now over 1/8th (or 12.5%) of the way through the 2012-13 school year. It all moved too quickly.
Talked to your student about what to expect this week. Is your home going to receive a note saying your daughter/son is in academic danger OR you not going to get a note this week? The prediction should be interesting. Your son/daughter know rather well if there is a problem in the class or not. If you are looking at the Parent Portal you probably have a good idea as well.
Academic success is important. We want all our students to be college and career ready which means they need to make an effort. Schools to not open the brain and pour stuff in. We need students in class on a regular basis. We need them prepared and willing to learn. We do not need to struggle with behavior issues. We want students to make reasonable and appropriate use of their time.
If you have questions please email your daughter/son's teacher now. Have that conversation with your son/daughter. We want your child to succeed. Together we can make good things happen.

Lena Hedberg, SW Senior rowing in Head of the Charles Regatta
Southwest Senior Lena Hedberg and her junior double partner Ashling O'Sullivan, qualified to row in the Head of the Charles Rowing Regatta in Boston - Oct 20-21. (The Charles is like the World Series to a baseball player) They won a gold medal at the Head of Des Moines yesterday. The Head of the Mississippi is this next weekend, the Head of the Rock and then the Charles. So exciting!
