Nazeem x Spencer Joles: Bringing a new flavor to Minneapolis hip-hop

Nazeem Cunningham met Spencer Joles in middle school, and neither expected to be making music together almost a decade later.

“I kind of just went up to him and started freestyling, but we wouldn’t ever freestyle about anything or have it rhyme. It would just be ridiculous,” Joles said.

By the time the collaborators, now both 20, made it to Southwest High School, they began writing music seriously, and the two have been close collaborators ever since.

“Sometime in high school we realized we could actually kind of make music,” Cunningham said. “At first we were going to start a band similar to Rage Against the Machine, but then we started just writing raps, freestyle a capellas and stuff at lunch, and we just decided to be rappers after that.”

Coming of age in South Minneapolis has impacted their worldview and is referenced throughout their songs.

“South Minneapolis is awesome because there’s such a huge hip-hop influence, it’s a huge punk community, and I just like to observe those attitudes and those ideologies in my music and with fashion,” Cunningham said.

Their upcoming mixtape, coyly titled The Album, was produced entirely by Joles. It blends deceptive party tracks like “Smoke Daht” with the incise, razor sharp social commentary on “Chinatown Dreams” or “Fallen Souls,” which also features P.O.S. On the latter, they tackle white privilege, the case for reparations, and gun violence.

Be VERY Careful Driving or Walking

Do not attempt the hill on 47th. It is snow covered & slippery.

Be very careful driving and walking about Southwest. Lots of snow - I know that is an obvious statement. The streets and sidewalks are very slippery and snow covered.

Drop off and pick up students on 46 or Chowen or Abbott. Please do not attempt to come up the hill. The front of the school will be very congested. Please find an alternate route.

Be careful on streets and sidewalks.

All Minneapolis schools are OPEN, Wednesday February 3, 2016.

Buses may run late depending on street conditions and slow traffic. Make all children are dressed for the weather.

Side streets and side walks will be slippery. Be careful when driving or walking. Please take extra time and patience around schools and school cross walks.

Southwest W. 47th Street Hill is VERY Slippery

Streets and Sidewalks are VERY slippery!

Please drive and walk carefully on all the side streets and walks.

The 47th St. hill is VERY

slippery!

If you aer driving to Southwest from the east be very careful on 47th. Come west from Xerxes is VERY slippery and your car may not make it to the top of the hill.

Driving on 46th Street and picking up son or daughter at 3;15 is better and safer idea.

Be wise and stay away from the hill on 47th and Abbott.

Tuesday After School Activities Including Community Education Classes and Budget Meetings All Evening Activities Canceled

The Superintendent decided to cancel after-school activities. We will be sending the following robocall to all families within the hour.

This is an important message from Minneapolis Public Schools. We are calling to inform you that all student after-school, athletic events, and evening activities have been canceled today, Tuesday, Feb. 2, due to inclement weather and road conditions. Minneapolis Kids after-school child care will remain open until 6 p.m. or until all children are picked up. All middle school students should take their regular after-school bus. All adult, evening Community Education classes are canceled. The community meeting on the budget process and the board finance committee meeting at the Davis Service Center are also canceled.

Buses are likely to be delayed today and tomorrow morning due to heavy snowfall expected this afternoon and overnight. Please ensure your students are dressed warmly for the weather.

Again, this is Minneapolis Public Schools calling to inform you that student after-school and evening activities have been canceled today. Thank you.

Southwest Artist On Display

The following students from Southwest High School have work on display at the John B. Davis Gallery from now until March 4th.

Next time you are at the Davis Center make sure to stop and check it out.

Thank you to your wonderful Visual Arts teachers, Cecily Spano and Ben Zhao, for submitting such high quality student artwork to represent Southwest.

In addition, Lucia Sullivan Possehl and Naomi Klaila have also won a Tracy Award for their work. Lucia won a $1500 scholarship and Naomi won a $1000 scholarship that can be used at any post secondary institution.
