Open House & New Schedules

Well tonight was supposed to be Open House but it has been postponed for two weeks until Tuesday, September 28 starting at 6:30 pm.

New schedule is the activity for the day. Will see how it works out tomorrow. For the 9th and 10th graders the new schedules will see some major changes. Those are the increased sections and the greatest amount of change. Some 12th graders will see none at all. The changes are significantly better than the large sections.

Teachers will post grades at the conclusion of the three weeks and then pass them on to the new teacher if a change was made. All students will receive credit for their hard work this early in the year. At the same time, we will work with struggling students.

There are lots of reasons for the need to make these schedule changes. The majority have to do with attempting to meet the needs of families and students. As the entire district settles into the new boundaries it will be easier to make more accurate projections. In the future there will be fewer students attending high schools outside their high school attendance zone.

Join PTSA. Come to Open House of the 28th. Have another great school year.

The scheduling fiasco is a significant error. I would like to know what went wrong, and what measures are in place to assure it won't happen again.

Projections are made using past information. More students wanted to be at Southwest and the distict is attempting to accommodate families. It haas happened before. Estimates are informed guesses and that is about all. By Monday we will have had 14 days of school. I think that is a rather quick response.

Seems as though there are too many kids coming from outside the District which has contributed to the large class sizes. What was that email about a new parent-student liason who would work with families in the North, Henry and Edison attendance zones? Why are we trying to get kids from outside our zone to come to SWHS?

Fewer and fewer students living outside the SW attendance area are attending SW. The new district is considerably larger than the previous one. It follows 395 into downtown to the river. On the south is extends over through the Windom area. The district provided resources for a parent liaison to support families new to this attendance area. I would suggest reviewing the new attendance boundaries.

Hi Bill,

Can you explain why SW would continue to accept students when the school is at (or above) capacity? Whether you live in or outside the attendance area, doesn't matter if the school is full. Is the district mandating this?

Also, I wondered if getting the schedules out earlier in the summer wouldn't help resolve this earlier. My daughter had an error in her schedule and was told to wait until that hour in the first day of school. It was a clerical error that I believe should have been corrected ahead of school start. Being that these schedules are so intertwined, I would think that correcting these type of errors early August rather than the first week of school would only help solving these bigger issues.

Thank you!

Southwest does not accept or reject students. Those decisions are at the District placement office. The choice to place students in any of the 7 high schools is made through the Placement Office and not through any of the high schools.

Schedules are completed as late as possible in order to accommodate students who enter close to the start of school. We make corrections as quickly as we can.
