Parents and guardians of SW students,
In 1946, President Truman signed into law an act that
provided students of limited financial means the ability to receive free or
reduced priced lunch (F/RPL) from their school. For nearly 70 years, students
across the country have had access to meals that they may otherwise not have
had. While the free/reduced lunch has obvious benefits for students, there are
also benefits at the school level.
As the lowest funded high school in the district, we rely on
every dollar that we are allotted to serve the nearly 1800 students in our
building. One critical source of funding is the Title 1 money that is
distributed based on the percentage or concentration of students who apply for
and qualify for free/reduced lunch. For the last several years, we have reached
the district’s minimum percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch
and, as a result, have received additional funding.
The district will determine additional funding based on the
percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch as of this Friday, Dec
4. At this point, we do NOT qualify for the additional funding that we
have received for the past several years. We are asking that EVERY FAMILY who
believes they may qualify or who is unsure to apply for free/reduced lunch.
Students who qualify are not required to eat lunch at school, and as other
programs use F/RPL as criteria for support, we are able to provide additional
resources to qualified students.
Please, take a moment to submit an application. Not only can
you help your student, you can help the greater community of Southwest.
