A private school for young girls is
scandalized when one spiteful student, Mary Tilford, accuses the two
young women who run the school of having a lesbian relationship. This
explosive drama written by the virtuosic Lillian Hellman made waves
when it premiered in 1934. Herself a target of the McCarthy era
blacklisting of Hollywood and Broadway artists, to Hellman this was a
play about the evil power of slander.
