Your Support Is Needed

Please consider supporting Southwest in other ways. Here are some ideas we have been sharing with parents:

• Make a direct financial contribution to the Southwest Education Fund. Go to www.sweducationfund.org or click on the “donate now” button on the homepage of Southwest High School Online donations are processed through Achieve Minneapolis. Please make sure to specify Southwest High School. You may also send a check, made out to Southwest Education Fund, to Southwest High School, 3434 West 47th Street, Minneapolis MN 55410.

• Sign up for Target’s Take Charge of Education RedCard and designate Southwest High School. Use this credit card for your Target purchases and 1% goes back to Southwest High School. We receive over $20,000 a year from this program. That is a lot of spiral notebooks and cleaning supplies! See www.target.com/tcoe.

• Shop at Kowalski’s grocery store on 54th and Lyndale and put your receipt in the plastic bin marked Southwest (the plastic bin is located at the end of the check out lanes in one of the windows facing onto Lyndale.)

• Check with your employer about matching funds. Your Human Resources Department is the best place for more information.

• Donate paperbacks books to the Paperback Exchange at 2227 W 50th Street. When books are donated, they create a credit for Southwest High School students. Students can then use these credits to buy books at a deep discount (70% for used books and 25% off the trade credit for new books). Make sure you identify yourself as a Southwest High School parent or student.

Thoughts About 7-Period Day

As we approach the end of the first quarter - yes, 9 weeks have passed since the start of school - that is 25% of the school year  -  it is a good time to reflect.

A major change for this school year was the 7-period day.  We are reviewing the past 9 weeks and having some discussions about the 7-period day and what we believe are advantages and disadvantages.

If you have thought or comments you would like to add to that discussion, please email me - bsmith@mpls.k12.mn.us

In the next month we will be reviewing the schedule and the use of time.  Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

First Day of Finals Over

Quarter Finals started today.  Finals were in classes held during 1, 3, 5, and 7th periods.

Wednesday is the PSAT test.  Over 300 11th and 10th grade students are taking the test so it provides a breather from finals.

Thursday is the second day of First Quarter Finals and those will be in periods 2, 4, and 6 classes.

Hard to believe that 25% of the school year is finished.

No School on Friday November 2 for students.  That is a records day and teachers will be working but students will be home for a three-day weekend.

Second quarter starts Monday November 5.  Don't forget to "fall back" an hour with the change from daylight savings time.

Tuesday 7 pm Fine Arts Festival

Tonight... Tuesday October 30th at 7:00 p.m., hundreds of students will be showcasing Southwest in the  Fine Arts.  Students in Choir, Dance, Visual Art, Theater, Film and Instrumental Music will be showing their progress thus far in what we are calling "Southwest Fine Arts Festival"(or formative assessment) and the fabulous students that contribute.

It's a chance for parents, teachers and friends to see all art forms offered at Southwest.

Please come.  It's free.  Donations are accepted.

Winning doesn't always define Champions

The fall athletic season in winding down for this school year.  Cross Coutry is still going strong with four Lakers going to state next Saturday.  Girls Swimming season continues this week, with the Twin City championship meet on Wednesday against St Paul Central and then 6AA sections on November 8th and 10th.

Volleyball and Football both ended their season with their second game loss in Sectional play.  Winners frequently are those with the highest score at the conclusion of the game. That is definitely one way to look at it and the most common.  However, I think that character of the team and the tenacity within it has to be considered.

With one senior on the City Champion Volleyball team next year holds tremendous promise.  The GPA of the Varsity Team is well over 3.8.  Two of the current Lakers have already signed college intent letters to notable universities.  This is a classy team with smarts and a wonderful spirit.  One cannot watch the play without seeing the strong relationships among the team.  This has been a fun season to watch and we wish all the members great success.

The football team has come from never scoring to really being a strong contender in the city and the area.  In a Washburn game that just fell short to a Twin City Victory to a sectional game win - the first since 1990 - this has been a team with pride and character.  Working together they have brought attention to a sport at Southwest that many discounted.  Several seniors are being recruited to colleges across the country.  We wish the team members well.

Not always sure that competition should gain the attention that is does, but working as a team, practicing hard, and demonstrating ones skills and talents is what happens in business and the real world.  Athletics are an important part of the high school experience.  Southwest is fortunate that there are many ways to become a star and achieve one's dream.  We are proud of our players whatever might be their venue.

Kids Voting

Hello, parents! Kids Voting Minneapolis is back this year.

Kids Voting Minneapolis (KVM) is a community-based, non-partisan civic education non-profit organization that supplies teachers with free classroom activities and offers students an authentic voting experience.

Students who go with their parents to their precinct polling place on Election Day, Nov. 6, can vote on their own Kids Voting ballot, in their own voting booth with an adult volunteer to help, if needed.

The Kids Voting booths will be open for voting from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In order to staff all 115 Minneapolis polling places, KVM needs many volunteers to assist students. It is always especially effective when parents are volunteers, so KVM is hoping you might consider becoming a volunteer.

Each volunteer serves a 3-hour shift, from 2-5 p.m. or 5-8 p.m. You can contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Will Howell at will@kidsvotingminneapolis.org or by phone at 612-568-VOTE (8683).

Our motto is “Vote Young Vote Forever”. Please help us instill in our young people the “habit” of exercising their civic right and responsibility to vote.

Alumni New Film Makers Need Support

Lewis Wilcox and Jonah Sargent created a documentary and are currently seeking support so we can dedicate more time to following the story. It's about the North Dakota oil boom, the Wisconsin sand mining and the small towns that have been forever changed by the influx of Big Oil.

The funding mechanism we're using, Kickstarter, is all or nothing - if we do not reach $6,000 dollars in 13 days, no money is raised and nobody is charged. We have raised over $2,000 so far and need your help to hit our goal.

Here is the link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jonahsargent/nodak-rigged

We appreciate any time you take to help share our work. We could not have made a project we care about.

Southwest does not endorse the project nor Kickstarter.  Lewis and Jonah are great former students and I am trying to support their dream.  See the website for more detail and a video clip that explains the project.

Four Southwest X Country Runners to State!

At a rainy, wet region race this afternoon, our boys and girls team did really well.

The boys raced first. Southwest has 3 boys making it to state meet at St. Olaf next Saturday. Junior Sam Sinkler , seniors Vince Puzak and Austin Knowlton all qualified for state meet. Our team including seniors Gus Metzdorff, Andrew McGillivary and Eric Holm, plus junior Micahel Gaines helped beat another higher ranked team, coming in 4th. Only Stillwater ranking #1 is outside of our region in the top 6 teams. We should be ranked 5th in the state in the final ranking.

The girls also did very well with junior Anna Ryden making to state individually.

In addition, both boys and girls team won academic team gold awards. Girls team GPA average is 3.97 and Boys team GPA average is 3.85.

Sam Sinkler, Vince Puzak and Anna won individual academic all state by having a 3.75 GPA or higher plus finishing in the top 15 at region this afternoon.

Our boys and girls worked really hard.  The main reason for our success this season is the hard work all the seniors were willing to put in this summer.

Ben Zhao, Cross Country Coach

Congratulations to the Cross Country teams and coaches

Dr. Roger Alfred Christgau 1949 Alumni

Dr. Roger Alfred Christgau

Dr. Roger Alfred Christgau died in his farm home outside of Austin, Minnesota on Friday, October 5, 2012. Dr. Christgau was born on September 9, 1931, in Crookston, Minnesota, where his father taught and coached at the Northwest School of Agriculture.

During the war, Dr. Christgau attended school in southwest Minneapolis. After his graduation from Southwest High School in 1949, he attended the University of Minnesota for three years before his passion for aviation and flight prompted him to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1952.

During his Air Force career he served in Korea, Formosa, and Okinawa. From 1955 to 1957, he served as an aerial combat instructor in F-100s at Nellis Air Force Base outside Las Vegas. His skills at aerial combat maneuvering (ACM) were widely recognized in the Air Force, and he was selected to compete in Air Force fighter pilot competition several times during his Air Force career. In July of 1957 he suffered life-threatening injuries in an aviation accident in Pipestone, Minnesota. After two years of recuperation and numerous surgeries, he entered the University of Minnesota Medical School and began a successful family practice in Minneapolis in 1964.

He was a member of the staff at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and highly regarded for his tireless and dedicated care for his patients. In 1978, in pursuit of his continued passion for flying, he purchased a rare and historic P-51 Mustang fighter plane named "Sierra Sue II." The plane saw combat during World War II and was a major attraction at Midwest air shows. "Doc," as he was known in aviation circles, was a popular figure on the air show circuit and earned a reputation among air show fans and fellow warbird pilots for his expert and daredevil flying. He was the central figure in the book "Sierra Sue II: The Story of a P-51 Mustang," published in 1993.

After his retirement from the practice of medicine, in 2005 he moved from his home in Indian Hills in Edina to Mower County, to operate and manage the family farm. He will be remembered by many for his aviation and professional accomplishments. His family and friends will remember "Rog" for his generosity, audacity, quick wit, loyalty, strength and courage. They will recall his passion for history, his intellectual prowess for the complicated and the mundane, his gentle demeanor, his love of speed, and his devotion to family. He is an irreplaceable son, brother, uncle and friend.

He leaves behind his grieving family, hundreds of friends, and thousands of airshow admirers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Christgau and Alice Erickson Christgau, and his older sister Kathleen Devaney. He is survived by his brother John, his sister-in-law Peggy, as well as two nieces, three nephews, and five grand nephews and nieces. The family requests those interested in making contributions do so in Dr. Christgau's name to the charity/ cause of their choice. .

Southwest Front Yard a Work in Progress

A bare spot in the front that could be the home of Hostas
If you are splitting your Hostas have some to spare, we can find them a home.

And the limbs coming falling down
Tree trimming to allow more sun for the grass
and healthy for the tree

Long overdue, the front yard at Southwest High School is receiving some attention.  Yes, the grass is growing and hopefully will be a green wonder in the spring.  Trees are wonder and we want them to be healthy and a nice addition to the looks of the building.

Workers spend the day working on the trees out front and in the court yard.  They have the expertise and equipment.

Now we need your help.  First, do you have Hostas that you are willing to share?  as you can see from the photos and visits to the school, there are lots of places for them.

Second, do you have time to volunteers some labor hours?  We want to plant the Hostas and finish the work in the court yard.  If you have some time, please email Joan Leverenz our volunteer coordinator.  We will be putting together a work schedule before the weather gets too cold and snowy.

Third -- what do you think about benches in front of the wall in front of the school.  There is open space on both sides of the main entrance.  What do you think about adding mental benches in those open areas between the wall and the sidewalk?

Social Media is NOT Private

Star Tribune front page news - College Admissions looking at applicant's social media presence.

Not exactly breaking news but worth repeating.  Social Media is NOT private.  At least as a respondent to an anonymous survey college admission officers are admitting what we guessed at for years.  In this day of competition, how do the colleges make a decision about some excellent (on paper) candidates?

Employers have been saying it for years.  What you post on public places is all part of your true resume'.  You may think that was cute when you were 15 but tyring to win that job at 22 places a different value on those social media pictures.

Most popular colleges and universities are swamped with applications.  There are more applicants than places to place the students. In trying to find the best students who fit the college and alumni image admission people are doing what is easy and available.

Google your own name and see what immediate pops to the surface.  That is without any advance searches of limiting factors.  It is amazing what pictures, words and descriptions show up.  Once it is posted it is out there.  Instead of bragging to friends in words and pictures of what you got away with this weekend, you might want to spend some time cleaning up your public record.

Use your social media as part of your personal capital --put yourself in a positive light and not that of current fool of the week.

Red Ribbon Week Oct. 21-27

Red Ribbon Week - October 21-27, 2012

Every October, during Red Ribbon Week, schools around the country encourage young people to live a drug-free life.

Alcohol is the most commonly used drug by youth—more than all illegal drugs combined, in fact. That's why MADD wants to help young people take a stand against underage alcohol use, help schools educate young people about the dangers of alcohol and equip parents to have potentially lifesaving conversations about alcohol with their kids.

This Red Ribbon Week, whether you are a teen, parent or educator, use your power to make a difference and save lives.

and Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Clinton
Information provided by Eric Schwartz, Dead of Humphrey School
On October 26, Jake Sullivan, State Department Director of Policy Planning and Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will speak at the Humphrey School on “American Leadership in the 21st Century.” Sullivan, a Minnesota native, has been deeply involved in all of the major national security issues confronting the United States over the past four years, from the Middle East and South Asia to Africa, the Americas, East Asia and the Pacific.

Eric Schwartz, Dean of the Humphrey School, served at the State Department with Sullivan between 2009 and 2011, and commented on Sullivan’s role: “As both the director of the key foreign policy planning office at the Department of State and one of the Secretary of State’s closest personal advisers, Jake Sullivan has played an extraordinarily important and influential role in both the development and implementation of U.S. foreign policy.”

Driving Around the School

Before and After school are busy times.  Please consider using 46th or Abbott or Chowen to drop off and pick up students.  There is one huge traffic jam with the buses and the narrow street left on 47th.

The alley between Beards and Chowen is not intended to be a through street.  It is narrow and many students walk th alley.  Please do not use the alley as a convenience to get away from Chowen.

The traffic in the morning and after school is a problem.  If we all adjust a bit it should be safer and more neighbor friendly.  Please look for parking restrictions when parking you car.  Please drive slowly on any of the street around the school.

In advance, Thank you

Red Ribbon Week - Oct. 21-27, 2012

Kids Voting Volunteers Needed

Hello, parents!  Kids Voting Minneapolis is back this year.
Just to refresh everyone’s memory, Kids Voting Minneapolis (KVM) is a community-based, non-partisan civic education non-profit organization that supplies teachers with free classroom activities and offers students an authentic voting experience.
(Note: This year, if your school is a regular polling place, the school may be planning to have the students vote at the polls during the school day with help from parent and staff volunteers. Check with your student or the school to find out if this is the case.)

Community Service in the Neighborhood

Each week numerous Soutwhest stduents canvass the neighborhood for litter and trash.  Southwest wants to be a friendly neighbor.  We recognize that our students, guests and fans sometimes a more careless than they should be.  Thus, we hve trash and litter scattered throughout the neighborhood.

The school encourages clubs, sports and activities to do this community service and earn some extra money for the club or activity.  It is a fun activity and gives the students and neighbors a chance to meet.  Frequently the students return with stories and their pleasant encounters.

Southwest wants to be a good neightbor and is trying to support and clean and attractive neighborhood for us all.

Your Support is Wonderful in Many Ways!

• Sign up for Target’s Take Charge of Education RedCardtcoe.

Thank you for supporting Southwest students and programs!

Volunteers Needed - Parking - Facilities

Every five years we attempt to update some of our thoughts and plans.  Five years ago we review the outside appearance of the buildings, the inside of the facility, the capacity and use of the building and long term expectations.  About 7 years ago a parking plan was development and then actually implemented by the city and neighbors except for the part about using the Quest parking lot.

It is time to review all of that again.  Thus, we need volunteers to attend probably at least two meetings.  One to review current conditions and a second to walk through (or around).  A "report" will be prepared at the conclusion of that particular group's work.

If you are interesting in working on any of the above topics, please email me and I will return to you the meeting dates and times.  We will not meet in the next two weeks.

In advance, Thank you

Dances and What Should Be Happening

High School dances are a part of the entire experience.  They are memories we all have.  For some those are fantastic and for some miserable.  We would like to think we are providing opportunities for wonderful memories and treasured moments in the four-year experience.

For some of our students the dances are not all that much fun.  Too much bump and grind - too much body pushing and pounding.  Many of our female students are complaining about feeling pressured into a situation they are not comfortable with and do not appreciate.  However, at 14 or 15 how do you go against your friends (?) and peers.  Many of our males express surprise at what they feel is an expectation and are not comfortable with the pack but don't want to left out.

These overly sexual moves are not necessary in a public setting.  The majority of the students at a school activity want to have fun and enjoy the experience with their friends.  They are not interested in ruining some one's reputation or being part of such immature behaviors.

Families need to have the discussion with son/daughter.  How does one go against the norm?  It should be easy in a public setting but moving out of harm's way is a learned skill.  In addition to dances there will be parties and other less public events.  How does one maintain one's own self-respect when it seems to be the norm to do other things?

Southwest High School Dances are for family entertainment and fun.  They will not be hampered by a few who have little self respect and self control.  Any mother/father who wishes to should be able to attend the dance and be comfortable with what he/she witnesses.  No, we do not need to return to the days of yesterday but we do need to eliminate the sexual pressures and overtones.

Children should have fun.  The Southwest High School dances will be for the establishment of positive memories for all students.

Drama Free Comunicaiton - Parent and Child

PTSA Meeting: Drama Free Communication

October 9, 2012 - Drama Free Communication: Handling Difficult Interactions with Your Teen

Dr. Jody Janati, University of MN, Faculty in Communication Studies

Learn drama free step by step techniques that demonstrate practical solutions for difficult interactions with your teen. Learn to control anger and emotions, be assertive and effectively diffuse conflict through a variety of approaches that really work. Set healthy boundaries and ultimately find your "Conversation Peace."

7 pm in Media Center in teh East Building at Southwest High School

And Time Goes On

So we are adding a minute to passing time.  Starting Monday, Oct. 8 there will be 5 full minutes between classes.  Gone is the excuse for being late to class.

The long term solution is to extend the school day by moving start time to 8:00 am.  That is not going to happen this year but probably will be the case for the 2013-14 school year.  A year late to benefit your child but that is way it is.

The bell schedule starting Monday is:
Period 1     8:30 - 9:17
Period 2     9:22 - 10:09
Period 3    10:14 - 11:01
Period 4    11:06 - 11:53
Period 5    11:58 - 1:16
      A Lunch 11:58 - 12:24
        Class 12:29 - 1:16
      B Class 11:58 - 12:45
        B Lunch 12:50 - 1:16
Period 6      1:21 - 2:08
Period 7      2:13 - 3:00

Still providing outstanding quality educational opportunities for all children regardless of the minutes in the passing time!

Homecoming Pep Fest is now Legendary

Southwest Pep Fest Fall 2012

Homecoming Pep Fest -- great job Student Council and all the teams and the entire student body!!

A little chilly but lots of cheering and excitement.  Dancing by all and another homecoming pep fest is in the history books and part of the legends.

We have great kids!

Friday Pepfest and Homecoming

Nice start to a fall day.  Feels like a great football, soccer, tennis, cross country, swimming, volleyball day.

Pep fest is at the stadium this afternoon with all the yelling and screaming that goes with being that age.  WE attempt to establish new traditions but there are a couple knuckleheads who hang on to the belief that these activities are an excuse to be unkind to 9th graders.  That is one I wish their parents never started.

Homecoming game, parade and dance are on Saturday.  It really a day of celebration of the high school experience.  Homecoming is almost universal in US education institutions.  It is its own rite of passage.  Most of the memories connected with homecoming are pleasant.  We certainly hope those continue.

We want our kids to be safe and responsible.  You might have a little chat about things.  Does your son/daughter clearly understand your expectations.  We want our kids to have fun.  We do not want a single mistake to ruin a life.

Homecoming is full of memories.  Think of your own and then have that conversation with your daughter/son.

warmer temperatures help

The building is not freezing.  But it is also not freezing outside.  We love our winter but the long fall is okay also.

Yes we are quickly working on our boilers because we can keep the snow away for a while.  But in the meantime the building is a comfortable temperature.  All the active bodies definitely help.  Many of our students are dressed in layers and some of that has to do with the forecast.  Most of our costumes for the day have to do with homecoming week.

Today is Classy day which is a secret code day for school class colors.  Tomorrow is school spirit day and that means purple.  All part of the high school experience.

Sweater Season - Boiler Issues

Greetings: I regret to announce that it may be cool in the building over the

next day or 2 or 5. One of our boilers is leaking steam, and the other

has some welding to be finished. Please be aware of this and bring

a sweater or sweatshirt or jacket to help keep you warm. Advise your

students to do the same. Hopefully this issue will be resolved quickly.

We will continue to monitor the building and areas within the building.

Mid-Terms Finished

This is the start of the sixth week of the school year.  We are now over 1/8th (or 12.5%) of the way through the 2012-13 school year.  It all moved too quickly.

Talked to your student about what to expect this week.  Is your home going to receive a note saying your daughter/son is in academic danger OR you not going to get a note this week?  The prediction should be interesting.  Your son/daughter know rather well if there is a problem in the class or not.  If you are looking at the Parent Portal you probably have a good idea as well.

Academic success is important.  We want all our students to be college and career ready which means they need to make an effort.  Schools to not open the brain and pour stuff in.  We need students in class on a regular basis.  We need them prepared and willing to learn.  We do not need to struggle with behavior issues.  We want students to make reasonable and appropriate use of their time.

If you have questions please email your daughter/son's teacher now.  Have that conversation with your son/daughter.  We want your child to succeed.  Together we can make good things happen.
