Cockoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka J.K. Rowling

The Cuckoo's Calling is a mystery detective book.  It has back story, murder, bad people and good people.  The hero has a past and trying to get by with his own haunts and bad love relations.  The book has mystery and wide turns.  It has the forward moving plot with one clue at a time but usually with a twist and unexpected.

The book is an easy summer read and definitely fits in the detective style and manner.  Now comes the exactly part.  After is was discovered the Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for the famous writer J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter fame the book became a best-seller.

I liked the development of the two main characters.  Cormoran Stike is the detective and is a likely and flawed individual.  He has sufficient depth that could go on for several more novels.  He is not a super hero with magical powers and really keeps within his capabilities.   I think he is believable.

The female lead is his accidental temporary secretary Robin Ellacott.  The character development was nicely done.  She is recently engaged, not sure what she is going to do with her life and not exactly sure about Cormoran.  This is a great pair that have possibilities; in my opinion.  For a hero and side kick I have seen worse by miles.  I think Robin is as much the hero as Cormoran or could be with a with minor adjustments in story line.

Rowling is donating profits from the sale of the book to charity.  There has been interesting news events and they did not hurt book sales.

Regardless of the author, the story is not exactly original and that has not stop many of the famous detective story writers in the past.  Good read and fun characters.  I expect to hear more from Cormoran and Robin in the future.
