Model UN Wins at Tournament

I am very pleased to announce that Southwest was recognized in three of the most competitive committees. McLean Cozine was recognized as Best Delegate in the Present day Security Council and Weston Lowry recognized as the Delegate's Choice Best Delegate for the Historical Security Council. Nathaniel Larson was also recognized as the Delegate's Choice Best Delegate for his role as the Minister of Industry and Trade for the Present Day Russian Cabinet. These committees usually have the most senior and experienced members from the participating schools.

Over 55 schools and nearly 1200 from around the world attended the conference. Historical committees addressed issues from 1983 including the shooting down of Korean Air 007 and the Iran/Iraq conflict. Present day committees worked through simulations related to continued Russian aggression including the Cabinet of Russia (Southwest had two representatives) deciding to hold illegitimate referendum votes in Estonia and invade the country. The simulations changed in real time and students must critical think throughout the conference.

We should be very proud of their hard work over this weekend. It was a great experience and I am very happy with how our students handled themselves throughout this stressful and long weekend. As a club, we have grown from 8 a couple years ago attending local conferences to upwards of 50 attending local conferences and 37 attending the conference this year in Chicago (up from 23 last year). I am looking to expand to even more conferences next year as the club continues to grow.
