Let's Start a Coder Dojo at Southwest H.S.!  Parent Volunteers Needed!

What is a Coder Dojo?  It's a volunteer-led, global movement of free coding clubs that offer youth and teens exposure tocoding and the world of information technology.  There is a vast need in the Twin Cities where the few clubs fill instantly and are turning away lots of kids.  To start a Coder Dojo at Southwest we need parent volunteers willing to commit 2-3 hours a month on an evening or weekend.  You do not need to know anything about coding--you will learn right alongside the kids.  You do need to be comfortable using a PC (not Mac) and accessing the internet.  Interested? Email madeleinelowry@hotmail.com.  We hope to get started in January.

Spoken Word

Spoken Word is looking forward to another phenomenal year of speaking truth.  All students are encouraged to join us on Thursdays from 3:15-4:15 in room #212.  Write poetry, share your poetry, and hear the poetry of others, all as part of performance art.  Our first Be Heard poetry slam is Friday February 6 right here at Southwest.  Students can compete against other poets from around the state for a spot on the team representing Minnesota.  Southwest was proud of the three Laker poets that represented Southwest and Minnesota in Philadelphia this past summer at the Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam.  Join Spoken Word, all are welcome.

Southwest Green Team Update

  • Next GT Meeting is December 8, 6:30-8:00.  Former members of the GT attending St. Olaf will be presenting environmental workshop projects & ideas to the Green Team.
  •  Insulation of East Building Windows & the Link:  The Green Team has been installing interior insulated windows in some of the rooms in the East Building, and also in the Link.  The average heat loss without this insulation is about 25-30% of the heat.
  • Canning was fun!  The Green Team learned how to properly preserve fruits and vegetables with our GAE canning teacher – John Gavin.  Jars of cranberry sauce were made for their families, and the extra jars will be donated to the Simpson Housing Shelter – great job Green Team!
  • Environmental Field Trips After the Holidays:  We will be visiting the downtown garbage incinerator (“HERC”), a solar panel plant, a glass re-making factory, and an urban farm at the St. Paul Campus.
  • Feed My Starving Children:  Our community service committee of Kirsi Oldenburg, Sien McFalls, and Nicola Lowry will be scheduling trips on Monday evenings (not GT meeting nights) for January, February and maybe March too.
  • Habitat for Humanity:  We will be going to HFH on a Saturday in January and February.  Dates TBD.

Selection of Green Team Workshops for the Grade Schools:  We will begin visiting public, private and parochial grade schools to present our environmental workshops after the first of the year.
