The 2015 Southwest Speech season
was filled with twists and turns that ultimately left us not knowing what to
truly expect from sectionals. The results from the previous week’s National
Forensics League tournament were very promising, but sectionals are a
completely different monster. The one thing that we did know on the night of
the 6AA Speech Sectionals was that what had preceded us did not matter.
We brought eleven students to the
sectionals tournament, four of whom were new to Speech as of this year. After
three preliminary rounds, five of the students made it to the final round,
including a newcomer to Speech, Fiona Hanley. There were two others (Maisy
Martin and Shira Rabkin) that missed going to the finals by one spot. Senior,
Henry Aoki, also fared very well, missing the finals round by only two spots.
Out of the five that were in
finals, four (all seniors) will be going to the State tournament, which is a
new record for Southwest. The group going to the State Speech competition is
comprised of Nathaniel Larson and Piper Shatz-Akin, who took first in
sectionals in the Duo category. Seth Colbert-Pollack also took first while
competing in Discussion, Piper, Nathaniel and Seth are the FIRST Southwest students to be Sectional Champions!
Lily Ren, who competed in International
Extemporaneous Speaking, came in at 2nd place.
