Some students may be planning to participate in a peaceful
walkout and protest on Friday, May 1, as part of the Black Lives Matter
movement. The citywide walkout was planned by the group Black Lives Matter
Minneapolis and more information about their event can be found online.
This is not a school event and responsibility of the students returns to the family.
We respect
students’ First Amendment right to peacefully assemble. We will not discipline
students for the act of protesting as long as the protest remains peaceful.
However, if students walk out of school, they will not be able to return to the
school for the remainder of the day, they will not be able to participate in
after-school activities and they may receive an unexcused absence.
Staff are
monitoring the situation and there are procedures in place to manage the
situation while respecting students’ rights.
If you have
concerns about your child’s participation, please talk with them about the
event and share your views with them. If you child plans to walk out that day,
ensure you have a way to stay in touch with them.
According to Black Lives
Matter Minneapolis, the walkout is planned for 10:30 to 2:30 that day,
culminating at Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue in south Minneapolis.
