Southwest IB English class visits with the Watt Munisotaram Buddhist Temple
The visit was a
celebration of the "works in translation" IB unit in IB HL
1 in which the students read texts set in China, Columbia, and Egypt. The first
book read was Balzac and
the Little Chinese Seamstress, which takes place during the Maoist
Cultural Revolution, concentrating on the erosive effects of the banning
of non-Maoist/communist specific art, literature, music, and
religion.
Buddhism was one of the main religions that was dismantled and
banned. The field trip was an attempt to learn about one of the cultures that
was devastated during Mao's regime and to show the resilient nature of culture,
in general.
The Watt Munisotaram Buddhist Temple is located near
Farmington, and is a wonderful center for education and have been gracious
hosts to our students.
