Summer JAM
Summer JAM is a
two-week "intensive" jazz camp. Jazz performance is the
primary focus; students performing in big band and combo settings.
Students will also study jazz history, improvisation, stylistically
accurate techniques, and various sub-genre styles. Staff and visiting
guest artists demonstrate and teach techniques, style, and
interpretation.
The Summer JAM
program is structured to include daily rehearsal in big band and
combos, music theory and guided music listening; students participate
in sectional master classes and attend performances from guest
artists.
The camp concludes with two
performances
- Thursday,
June 27, 7pm at South High School
- Saturday,
June 29 at the St. Paul Jazz Festival
Auditions
Students are
accepted and placed based on auditions and teacher recommendations.
For auditions, students should be prepared to play a piece in a jazz
style (preferably a head-tune e.g. Aebersold), sight-read, and play
scales. Improvisation is optional but encouraged at the
audition.
