Set in Glendale, California, in the 1930s, the book is the story of middle-class housewife Mildred Pierce's attempts to maintain her and her family's social position during the Great Depression.
Mildred Pierce by James Cain written in 1941 is an interesting strong female lead book later made into movie. The movie starred Joan Crawford. More recently is a mini-series made for television. The story is about the Depression but not really. It is about the years leading to the war and feminism but not really. The book is about being female and a mother and wife and single mom and lover and a person trying to survive.
Might be guilty of trying to cover too many emotions but definitely explore being female in a male dominated world. But in this novel there are no male heroes. All the males are female controlled and each displays a character weakness.
Good read and probably a decent tv series. One of those classics about an important time in American life.
