Change of classes

For a variety of reasons I wish every student changed classes at semester. 18 weeks of getting stuck with the same people - both classmates and teacher - seems long enough. Putting the same people together for almost any length of time over an hour is an interesting dynamic. You know who is going to speak first, tell the first joke and be bored the quickest. I doubt that in a group setting there are many occasions when one person sits with, talks with and stays with the same people for very long. We like variety and we are interested in what others have to say.

There is safety in the familiar. Those who are quiet stay that way. Those who have decided to be the class clown in the first five minutes of the first day stays that way. The people that just drive me nuts only do so longer. Mixing the group dynamics is beneficial to many students as their parents know from their own lives.

However, what does destroy the world through class change is "this is my favorite lunch time." I am comfortable being at the top (or bottom) of that class. All my friends are in that one (you have 6,000 Facebook friends and I bet they are all not in that class.) Sometimes the desire not to change classes is even based on girl-boy friend situations. Yes, that is still true. And we know how long all those stay constant in a year's time.

So we change some schedules at the start of the semester and there are a few outcries of pain and suffering from the event. I have yet to find a counselor or teacher who says that morning - this is my list of students I am going to make miserable today. And we sure are not interested in the extra work that schedule changes create unless they are absolutely necessary.

There are many reasons to like or dislike that teacher or that class. Having the opportunity to experience a variety of situations and personalities is also productive.

Second Semester

No big changes for second semester except for about 140 students not counting the normal semester course students. We had two social studies sections which resulted in the change of schedules for about 60 students. Not the easiest thing to do to 9th graders, but should make an better fit with smaller sections.

Two changes in the English department. By now, the teachers and students should have settled in. In both cases it looks like we will continue to offer quality educational opportunities to students so that should be a positive move.

It is a new beginning for many. There are not many but there are some semester courses left in the high school -- physical education, health, art, computer courses, theater and a couple others. We do not have lots of electives for students and the six-period day definitely limits those opportunities.

If your students have new teachers this semester, hopefully you can find an opportunity to meet him/her. I am confident your son/daughter is going to have a very positive educational program again this semester.

Speech Team win honors in season opener

The Southwest speech team participated in its first tournament of the season at Chanhassen High School this past weekend.

One junior, one sophomore and one freshman won honors and were recognized with awards on stage at the conclusion of the day's events. The respective categories were poetry interpretation and humorous interpretation.

A successful beginning for the team with a full season ahead.

If there are students interested in joining the team there is still time. Practices are Tuesday and Thursday right after school in room E103.

The team is especially looking for students in the categories - Discussion and Great Speeches. See Dr. Smith or come to practice for more information.

Music Listening Contest

Southwest music students competed in the Minnesota State Music Listening Contest.

Our top two teams tied for 3rd and 5th place respectively.

Great experience for all involved. W are pleased with the experience and look forward to another year. We can say this was our character building year.

Southwest Wins STATE World Quest Competition

Southwest won the Minnesota State World Quest, beating 2 time champion Chaska!

This means the team will be going to Nationals on April 24th in Washington DC. The team is happy and proud, although their humble nature did not allow even a glimmer of self-satisfaction.

The competition featured many schools from all over the Twin Cities, from St. Paul Academy to Mpls. South. Our modest Team 1, comprised of 2 seniors, 1 junior and 1 freshman, simply let their skills speak volumes and took home the main honors. Team 2 also faired well and were equally impressive in both academic and sportsmanship arenas.

I thank all of the teachers who obviously do a wonderful job preparing these students and their families for their continuing support.

English Teacher Changes

For a variety of reasons Southwest will have a change in two of its English positions. Students in the classes will be notified of the changes. No students in these English class sections will change schedules except for the teacher of their English sections.

We will continue to provide quality instruction and educational opportunities for all our students.'

The changes will be in effect Monday with the first day of the new semester. When you have a chance, stop by and meet the new teachers.

Change in Psychology Sections

There will be a teacher change for the second semester in the two sections of psychology. We will continue to prepare students for the IB exam and the Advance Placement examination.

The change will be at the semester break, Monday Jan. 25th.

We believe this will continue to provide our students with quality educational opportunities.

New Geography and US History sections

We are adding two sections of social studies to reduce the numbers in those classes.

We are adding one section of Geography and one section of US History. About 30 students in each section will be involved in the change.

This past week students were informed of the change. Students were offered the opportunity to volunteer to be moved. If sufficient number of volunteers are not secured, there will be a random selection of students to move to balance sections and fill the new section. Students were informed of this volunteer and random selection process.

We strive to offer quality educational opportunities for all our students. We do believe that the number of students in the class support quality education.

The change will begin Monday Jan. 25 with the start of the new semester. Thus, a logical time for the change. I know all students will continue to experience a challenging and rewarding program.

Finals for 1st semester

Just another day at the shop? Not exactly. Today and Tomorrow (Wed. and Thurs.) are Finals. This is the conclusion of the 1st semester. For some that is a wrap up of an interesting and successful 18 weeks. For others these days can be extremely important. The GPA of the early years make a significantly impact on the remaining years.

Grades are the most important parts of high school. However, being successful and making progress is important. Finals frequently do not determine the outcome of a semester but many times bump up a grade or add to the satisfaction of a job well done.

Friday is a day off for students. Then Monday is the start of the second semester. Good or bad that is a new start and new opportunity.

Student Congress on Economic Issues

Minnesota 2010 Student Congress on Economic Issues.

Southwest students compete in the annual event the past weekend. After a brief period of preparation with new teacher Mr. Ralston, the team won an award was for their outstanding performance in answering the question of how students should pay for college.

The winning team was comprised of students from Southwest, Roosevelt and Edison - all teams were a blend of two or three schools.

Other questions tackled by the students included the benefits and challenges of having a weak, strong or floating dollar, and a similar analysis of a health care system that is free-market, government run single payer, or a hybrid.

Congratulaltions to the team members and Mr. Ralston

Quiz tied for first and lost in overtime for State

The Southwest Quiz Bowl (not Knowledge Bowl) Team ended the season last night with an over-time loss to top ranked Chaska which brought us a few questions away from going to state.

We tied for a spot to go to state but only one team advances so an over-time round ensued. It was heart breaking but the team was pure grace under pressure and was proud that the team advanced further than ever before.

I cannot begin to tell you the class and poise this group of students exudes and the ambassadorship they provide for SW. The team that almost won had a composition of 2 seniors and 2 freshmen; a combination that is not often seen but worked quite well and held their own again a team of all seniors.

Thanks again to all of the teachers that have prepare these students so well.

Dan Ferris, Teacher and Coach

Roads are ice

All the roads surrounding the school are very slippery. Yes, we had a line (actually a long line) of buses this morning that could not make the crest of the hill at 47th and Beards.

It seems that each day the roads have actually gotten slipperier. The normal school traffic wears down the ridges and bumps and make the roads smoother and more slippery.

The city has attempted to keep up with the conditions but there are still problem spots.

If you have needs to drive in around the school, please use extra caution. We do not want you to slam into a parked car or find yourself sliding off to a side or into another vehicle.

Snow is predicted and that may provide some different traction, it will also add to the problems with all that ice below.

Be careful out there.

Knowledge Bowl Team in Top 10

The Southwest Knowledge Bowl team scored in the top 10 (out of many, many teams) in yesterday's meet.

The Southwest pair managed to beat teams that generally go to state every year.

The amazing part about this is that we did it with a 2 person team over 5 person teams.

Day 2 of 2010

Still keeping those New Year Resolutions? Much is written about keeping them, why they are important; who cares? Maybe you actually make a list or just reflect about some improvements that might be nice. Maybe a couple less pounds or a start on the exercise program are part of your new thoughts. But whatever the scope of resolution I hope you have success.

Without dreams there is no hope. We must see a brighter tomorrow if we are to make it through some of the tough spots that come our way. Our dreams become pathways and guides.

School funding returns to the front page. Regardless of your particular stand on the issues, I trust that you will consider what the reductions in funding have done to public services - including the schools. If we want a better tomorrow we have to take care of it today. That 9th grader only has one year as a 9th grader. I hope he/she is not part of the class that had to weakened for lack of sufficient funding.

A more lasting and sustainable system has to be developed for the appropriate funding of public services that provide for the common good. Please encourage your legislators to review the current taxing structure and begin the process of significant change that will be good for Minnesota for many years to come.

First Day of another set of opportunities

What happens next is a series of choices that each individual makes. Some of major and immediate consequence. Most are small and many unnoticed at that moment in time. In fact most of the decisions or turns in life that probably influence much of what happens is not an action but an inaction. Doing nothing, deciding not to are also decisions and have impact.

I hope you recognize each opportunity for what it is and have the wisdom and the courage to choose wisely for yourself, your family and our future.

Have a great first day and all that follow.
