Winter Blast Day Two

Well we are Lakers and not Lumber Jacks. Flannel shirts was about as close as got to the concept and the dozen people that moved in that direction were noticeable. We might not be able to follow the theme but we are having fun.

Blood drive tomorrow. If you have a bit you would like to donate to save a life, pleae stop by the East gym and help out.

Favorite Sport is the theme for Wednesday. That has some promise.

Day One winter spirit week

The theme for the day was "ugly sweater.". Not exactly a success story. Maybe our students have good taste. Maybe no one wanted to admit that he/she actually kept the ugly sweater in her/his closet. On top of that who would have predicted that the 30th of January was going to be 40 degrees. Not exactly the perfect day to wear a sweater let alone an ugly one.

Well let's see how "lumber jack" day goes. I think students from other schools sneak in here and pick these days.

It is going to be 50 tomorrow. Let's all wear flannel shirts.

Hot Notes on a Cold Night Gala

If you were not part of this fantastic show, you missed one of the biggest and most wonderful events of the year. You can still participate but we missed you!

A full night of tremendously talented Southwest students entertained the hundreds in attendance over a three set evening. Before between and after sets, the crowd was entertained with small groups on various level at the Children's Theater.

The event was a fund raiser for the music programs at Southwest. Dance, music, instrumental and theater presentations made for a full experience. Contributions can still be made to the Southwest Music Department. Check out the web site for complete details.

Make plans for next year. Approximately the same date. You definitely do not want to miss this two years in a row.

The Southwest Sailboat-Racing Club

The Southwest Sailboat-Racing Club

The sailing team accepts everyone from expert sailors to those who have never been on a boat. The goal of the team is to develop an understanding of sailing fundamentals, racing strategies, and a general enjoyment of sailing. Sailors who have progressed to racing level can compete weekly in local and/or regional regattas while earning a varsity letter. The sailing team uses 420s, which are a 2-person boat. Come with a partner or get paired up with a similarly skilled sailor at the club.

Who is it for? Any 8th through 12th grade student can join. Sign up individually and be paired with another sailor, or gather a team from your school. Sailing experience is helpful but a desire to sail is the only requirement.

More information is available at http://southwest.mpls.k12.mn.us/sailboat_racing_club.html

Calendar Survey

The district is interested in your thoughts regarding future school calendars. There is an online survey. There are specific questions for your responses. You do have room for other comments and thoughts as well.

Here is the address for the calendar survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X7BJ99L

You still can email your thoughts and I will transfer to the survey.

End of first semester

This past Friday was the end of the first semester. The school year is now half over. In general your son/daughter should have EARNED 9 creidits. Each quarter is worth .75 creidits with a passing grade. Thus, a full semester - two quarters - is 1.5 credits. Six courses means six times 1.5 credits and would result in 9 credits if your student earned a passing grade in all six classes.

This is very important as your son/daughter moves through the grades toward graduation. Failed courses in most cases need to be repeated. It is important to pass the class and earn the credit.

If you have questions about credits and passed/failed courses please call your counselors.

The future is HERE!

Not wanting to promote any specific company. There will be continued changes and competition. However, something to think about:

The new IBook application looks very interesting. If you haven't seen the video it gives a nice overview.

What do this mean to and for your students?

How can we make this productive for our students at Southwest?

Might be Slippery

Monday could be interesting. Rain, or at least moisture, and then cold temperatures so it freezes. They are predicting snow over night. All of that could result in a very strange morning. Snow we can deal with. Ice and freeze is unusual but then nothing is unusual at this point in the year.

Be careful. Expect some slow buses. Plan on extra time. Be careful of the streets and walks.

We will start with a very short advisory to pick up new 2nd semester schedules and then move to first period. The day will really be a regular bell schedule the rest of the day.

Be careful in the morning.

Finally a snowy morning?

Well it is the middle of January so why is snow in Minneapolis news? But that is the deal this year. Have to wait and see if it gets into the city. It currently is to the west and moving south. Still black ice is a problem on the roads. Be careful out there watching the cold and snow. Today is the second part of semester finals with only periods 4, 5, and 6. Monday is a no student day. Go visit an outdoor hockey game or read or just enjoy family and friends. Be careful!

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Made it through the day

In spite of the very cold beginning the day seemed to go well. Lunch was a little on the odd side beginning at 10:30. Everyone seemed to make it through without too much confusion.

Friday is a repeat of today except we only run periods 4, 5 and 6. As always we have activites all over the place in addition to trying to end the semester with a strong finish. One-half of the school year is behind and ahead of us as of the end of the school day tomorrow.

Tomorrow is also predicted to be cold with a chance of snow. For the skiiers the snow will be good. The cold is doing okay for the hockey players but need snow for the slopes. Still a bunch of winter left so might make it yet.

Dress warm, study and have another great day.

We Are Open!

The building is nice and warm and we aer open for the 1st day of first semester Finals. Remember the only periods today, Thursday, January 19 are 1, 2 and 3.

The periods are two-hour blocks. Fist period starts at 8:30 am. Second period starts at 10:30 am and 3rd period starts at 1:10 pm. The end of third period is 3:00pm.

Friday schedule will be similiar with only period 4, 5 and 6.

Be careful this morning. There are some slippery spots. The streets around the school appear to be okay. But there are patches of ice on both streets and walks.

Bundle up and wear layers. It is brittle outside but warm inside.

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Ice and snow be careful

Winter has been a long time coming this season. Thus, we have not developed our winter legs nor our winter driving skills.

Prediction is ice over and under this thin layer of snow. That makes for some interesting and potentially dangerous driving and walking conditions. Plan on some extra minutes to get to school, find a parking spot and walk safely into school.

Remember the hill on 47th is a bit steeper then you remember. Just because you parked successfully does not mean the block or two walk is safe. Ice is slippery. In a normal winter season we would be experienced winter, bad weather drivers and walkers. This has not been a normal season and we forget that falling hurts.

Please be careful around school. We do not want fender benders. We definitely don't want damaged people.

Shifting Gears and Parenting

Tuesday night the Southwest Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) presented an excellent speak and workshop at its program. Dr. Ada Alden presented a wonderful program entitled: Parental Shift vs. Parental Stuck. Adjusting Your Parenting as Your Teen Matures.

Dr. Alden presented a clear message about the need for rules and relationships within the family. Her humorous manner came with a direct recommendation -- "be the parent in the family - that is your job." She shares ideas about consistency and flexibility, the importance of family meetings and "hug your children."

More information about Dr. Alden and her resources are included in her website: www.adaspeaks.com. Her books are also available including her most recent "Red, Yellow< Green."

The next PTSA speakers program will be Tuesday March 13 at 7 pm. The topic is Teens and Technology presented by Erin Walsh. She will describe the risks and rewards of growing up in an online world and review what the research says about how media impact young people's health and development.

Look for more information the Southwest web site.

What are the parent questions?

We are planing for a course registration program(s) for this spring. We want to have an opportunity to provide parents the opportunity find answers and ask questions about courses for their students. This would be current 9th, 10th and 11th grade parents.

We have some ideas what the questions might be but we want to hear from you. What is that big question? What is the information you must have? How can we make any such meeting meaningful to you? Suggestions, ideas?

Email me your questions and thoughts. This will assist us greatly as we plan over the next 6-8 weeks.

School Calendar for the next couple years

Building the school calendar is interesting. There are numerous ideas about how to do it. It usually rolls around breaks and personal preferences.

Do we have two weeks at the winter break? When should be spring break? Should there be a spring break at all? When do we start school? and end?

Fixing the quarters and semesters is easy once the start, finish, winter and spring break are set. The rest just kind of fall in place.

What do you think. If you have opinions are any of this or the school calendar in general, please email me. The district is currently working on the school calendar and your input is important.

No School Monday January 23 for a Record Keeping Day

No School Monday January 23 for a Record Keeping Day.

Thanks for the comments from a reader. The comment was that the calendar was a bit misleading in not marking some days as No School and others not. For the reader the idea of No School means - don't send your children to school. If there is something else listed (for example - record day) is there school for students? Great input!

So we changed it on the calendar and hopefully will be clearer for students and parents.

Thank you for the input. If you have ideas or just want to comment about something, please email me. If you don't understand, there are probably others.

Southwest City Pool Opens after one-year renovation.

The Pool located in Southwest is OPEN!

The picture is the view from the new spectator bleachers high above the pool level. In addition to new bleachers, the pool diving area is deeper, remodeled locker rooms, new filtering and ventilation systems and new ceiling and score board.

The entrance to the pool area for swim meets remains door 17 but instead of going down the stairs to the entrance, one now goes up the stairs to the new entrances.

There is still work to adjust the ventilation system but that is all part of a new operation. The pool represents the continuing commitment of the District to quality facilities and a quality sports program for all students.

Beautiful Amaryllis Blooms

I know it is not purple. I do recognize that not everything in the world comes in that color. This is a picture of the Amaryllis blooms on my desk right now. There are four huge blooms.

I guess we have been lucky so far and today might be the "second" day of winter but having color provides a pleasant environment. It does not have to be dark and cloudy everywhere.

I know I respond to the sunlight. I feel better, I probably act better and generally feel more upbeat. It is hard to look at the flowers and not feel that the promise of bight sunny days is just right around the corner. And even if that is not true, I can pretend there is sunshine here at school.

Math Team Division Title Sixthe Consecutive Year

The Southwest High School Math Team wrapped up the division title for the sixth consecutive year on Monday night. There is still one meet remaining on February 13 at Southwest. Five of the Minneapolis high schools and one charter school met up at Roosevelt High School last night for the fourth meet of the year. It was a hard meet to prepare for because all of the practice time coincided with our scheduled winter break.

Some statistics from the meet:

  • 132 total students from six schools in the Minneapolis division participated.
  • 65 Southwest students participated individually at the meet.
  • 54 of the Southwest students scored at least one point. I think the eleven students who where “shut out” are kicking themselves for not studying over break.
  • Four of the top five scores at the meet were earned by Southwest students.
  • One Southwest student earned a whopping 12 out of 14 points. Remarkably, he did it by correctly answering six difficult questions and then missing two relatively easy questions.
  • The varsity team (official scoring team) earned 65 of a possible 136 points, finishing in first place within the division. We started the day in 14th place out of 170 teams in the state.
  • The junior varsity team earned 48 of a possible 136 points. That is good enough to unofficially finish second in the division for the first time this year. Way to go, JV!

Basketball Changes Nights Because of Election

Boys and Girls Basketball versus South originally scheduled for Tuesday January 10 have been changed to Monday, tonight, January 9.

The Southwest Boys Basketball challenge the South team tonight starting with 9th grade at 4 and Varsity at 7 pm.

Girl Lakers travel to South with Varsity at 7 pm and the 9th and JV prior to that.

Come out and support the teams

All Clear and Back to Normal

This past week we attempt to replace carpet in a couple of our classrooms. In the middle of one of the rooms we exposed some old tile. The majority of the room was a wood sub-floor. At that point work stopped and it was determined that the tile was asbestos. We reviewed the situation and decided that there was not sufficient time to completely renovate so we repaired the disturbed area.

This morning we started air testing around 6:00 am. Our outside asbestos contracting firm determine that the rooms and hallway were safe and our repairs were sufficient at this time. At no point were staff or students in danger.

Thanks to the support and efforts of district personnel we were able to return to a normal schedule as quickly as possible. The health and safety of our staff and students is the first priority.

We will move to abate the tile in the rooms and remove the carpet during break or this summer. If you have any questions, please contract me.

At this time we have an all clear and we are using the classrooms and hall.

Dance Opening Black Label Movement

Carl Flink, Artistic Director of the dance company Black Label Movement is an alumni of Southwest High School (1984). February 10, 2012 is the opening night of his dance theater company Black Label Movement's 5th Minnesota season at the new Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts in downtown Minneapolis. Tickets to the performance are listed at $26 ($22 plus a $4 service fees charge).

There will be a Valentine's Day party after the performance that everyone attending is invited to. I hope you can come! For more about my company visit www.blacklabelmovement.com.

Carpet replacement is the objective.

This past Wednesday we attempted to replace some carpet in the lower level of the west building (Mr. Kennedy and Ms. Marsnik's rooms). In keeping with Murphy's Law what started as a rather simple project became immediately complicated. Renovations will do that.

Once the actual project started it was discovered that there is asbestos tile under part of the carpet. The project immediately stopped and we are now developing a plan for removal of the tile and replacement of the carpet. In the meantime we need to protect the damaged area. We want to make certain that the students and staff are safe.

We will move classed from the damaged areas Monday and probably Tuesday at the least. We will monitor the air conditions both in the classrooms and the hallways. Lab results will determine our next moves. Once we have recommendations from our outside asbestos contractor, we will take the necessary actions. That may be repairing the area temporarily and finding a break time to permanently repair the rooms.

If you have questions please contact me. We are thankful the district continues to improve the classrooms at Southwest. It is unfortunate an unforeseen problem is causing some inconveniences. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

The safety of our students and staff will always be our first concern.

Winter Break Blues

Ok it is Friday and the last regular non-school day of the two-week winter break. Saturdays and Sunday's don't count as a break since there would no school on those days anyway.

That means you have about twelve hours to finish all the stuff you thought you would over the break. Smetimes those break rsolutions are worse than new years ones. I need to finish that book, fix that machine, sew that dress, learn the thirteen irregular past perfect verbs in Greek, or maybe get some rest. Whatever it might have been time is moving.

One way to deal with the issue is not. Accept the fact that it is not going to happen. Spend the remaining hours finding logical reasons why you really didn't want to do that anyway. In fact once you start thinking about it you are sure that it is fortunate that you didn't waste your time doing it. it was the wrong idea in the first place. Now that you have adequate time to consider all options there is someone better to do. Thank goodness you didn't ruin winter break on those stupid things.

Monday will be here and we can relive the adventures and hours we spent over the past two weeks away from friends. Not counting the hours on the phone or social network or whatever, we hardly talked to one another. Oh, there will be spring break and we'd start now making lists of the things we are not going to do then.

Three men in a Boston and Ulysses

Three men in a boat would have been in print and popular prior to the writing of the famous James Joyce novel Ulysses. In the original is was a serial spread over more than two years. It probably should be read that way today. "three Men in a Boat" was written in1889 and has been in continuous print ever since.

From Wikipedia-- Ulysses is a James Joyce. It was first serialised in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920, and then published in its entirety by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922, in Paris. One of the most important works of Modernist literature, it has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement". "Before Joyce, no writer of fiction had so foregrounded the process of thinking."

In 1997 Connie Willis wrote a "sequel" to "Three Men" - To Say Nothing Of the Dog. It is in the same Victorian Novel style but mixes in science fiction to make it modern. Joyce did not get a chance to read Willis addition to the original.

"Three Men" has the beginnings of the stream of consciousness that is the claim to glory of "Ulysses." Rather than a single day it covers a specific point in the connected lives of three men and a dog on the river boating. Both "Three Men" and "To Say" are of similar style. Both contain chapter epigraphs and outlines for the following. It is interesting to note that later versions of "Ulysses" edited by different people also had chapter headings and outlines.

If someone is looking for an extended essays topic or is interested ins becoming a writer or just enjoys the use of language, I recommend these books and particularly the first two. It would be interesting to research the similarities of "Three Men" and "Ulysses." However if you are going to read"Ulysses" I recommend using the original method and spreading it over two years with plenty of opportunity for reflection.

During break it is quiet

Not sure any other public building feels this quiet during break. The school is only a school when it glows in the noise and activity of it's students. For Southwest that starts around 6 in the morning and goes to 10 in the evening five days a week and frequently on Saturday.

The pool is almost ready to open. Looks nice. Locker rooms are bright and new. The pool area really looks about the same even though there is new decking and the diving area is deeper. The visitor seating is interesting being above the floor area. The teams will sit and be under the visitor seating. The entrance is on the first level above the old door into the pool.

A pause in the action, a moment to renew and refresh. Winter break marks almost the middle of the year. There are about three and a half weeks left in first semester. Seniors have their colleges apps in or almost finished. Now the wait and anticipation. Juniors are looking for PSAT scores and trying to think about that GPA that will show up on that application.

9th and 10th grade are generally out of all that. We want them to remember that all too soon those grades will become very important. But at this point they still think of those things very far in the distance. If we could get them to focus on the moment that would be great. Unfortunately the moment is the opposite gender and the driving test. Well, that is the way is has been for decades so we have to continue guiding.

It sure is quiet.

Winter Break Read Recommendation

"One Thousand White Women," by Jim Fergus. Fictional history of women being traded to Indians for horses in the Wild West days.

Has it all - Indian history, settlers' progress/hopes, women staking out their claims, slaves escaping bondage - it's all here!

A great and interesting read.

Barb Nicol (parent of SWHS Junior)

Thanks Barb. Other thoughts for reading recommendations? We can start our own reading list.

Mildred Pierce by James Cain

Set in Glendale, California, in the 1930s, the book is the story of middle-class housewife Mildred Pierce's attempts to maintain her and her family's social position during the Great Depression.

Mildred Pierce by James Cain written in 1941 is an interesting strong female lead book later made into movie. The movie starred Joan Crawford. More recently is a mini-series made for television. The story is about the Depression but not really. It is about the years leading to the war and feminism but not really. The book is about being female and a mother and wife and single mom and lover and a person trying to survive.

Might be guilty of trying to cover too many emotions but definitely explore being female in a male dominated world. But in this novel there are no male heroes. All the males are female controlled and each displays a character weakness.

Good read and probably a decent tv series. One of those classics about an important time in American life.
