Some Activities NOT Supported by School - Be Aware

Dear Southwest Families,
It has come to my attention that some Southwest High School students are participating in “alternative” dances, some of which coincide with school-sponsored events such as the Winter Formal.
Southwest High School does not approve of or endorse these activities. They are not Minneapolis Public Schools-sponsored events. We do not provide supervision and are not otherwise involved with such events. Students from other MPS high schools and neighboring school districts, and likely older non-students, are also attending the dances that are organized by students with parental assistance.

Please be aware that photographs, which may include evidence of illegal activity as well as lewd pictures at the alternative dances, have been posted to social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Students in these photos are identifiable. I understand social events take place every weekend, but some parents have been misinformed that Southwest High School organized the dances. Again, Southwest is not involved with these dances in any way.
Some photographs were provided by concerned alumni and friends.  The ease with which these persons stumbled upon the photographs should raise concern for students and families.  Once it is posted to social media, it becomes available to anyone with an internet connection.
In the coming months, high schools will celebrate Spring Break, Prom and the transition to college. While I have not learned of plans to host alternative dances to other events, my belief is that they will occur. I ask you to talk to your child about the potential risks involved and encourage her/him to exercise appropriate behavior to minimize dangers.

Please respond proactively should you hear about upcoming events. Inquire about the location, host of the dance and the type of supervision that will be provided. While off-duty Minneapolis PoliceDepartment officers are hired, it is our understanding that they do not enter the building.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 612.668.3030 or at Bill.Smith@mpls.k12.mn.

Sincerely,
Bill Smith
Principal, Southwest High School
