Choice of Weapons by Gordon Parks Library Activities Across the City

One Minneapolis One Read: A Choice of Weapons Book Discussion

Join us for a conversation about this year's One Minneapolis One Read book, A Choice of Weapons by Gordon Parks. Parks' autobiography, set in the Twin Cities, tells how he managed to escape the poverty and bigotry around him and to launch his distinguished career by choosing the weapons given him by “a mother who placed love, dignity, and hard work over hatred.” This program is presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.

The 2013 One Minneapolis One Read book selection is A Choice of Weapons by Gordon Parks, with a forward by Minneapolis artist Wing Young Huie. This program is presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.

One Minneapolis One Read: A Celebration of Gordon Parks

Gordon Parks was a renowned photographer, artist, composer and filmmaker. As we honor Parks for this year's One Minneapolis One Read, join us at the Minneapolis Central Library for a free screening of the HBO documentary Half Past Autumn: the Life and Works of Gordon Parks, followed by a panel discussion to celebrate Parks' life and legacy. This program is presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.

One Minneapolis One Read: Cameras as Weapons

In his book A Choice of Weapons, photographer Gordon Parks talks about choosing a camera as a weapon against everything he dislikes. At this workshop, teens join photographer Rudy Arnold of Juxtaposition Arts as he teaches how to use cameras as weapons to create visions of what you like. Cameras provided. This program is presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.

One Minneapolis One Read: Choosing Your Weapons

Through dance, media and sound, this family-friendly performance explores the life of photographer and poet, Gordon Parks, as he made difficult choices that shaped the course of his life. All ages will connect to this newly commissioned piece by The Ways Ensemble which combines the creativity of the Cottman family – Bill (photographer), Beverly (storyteller) and Kenna (dancer). This program is presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.
