Southwest - Should We Apply to be an Autonomous School

"Schools are the center of change. Fundamental to this viewpoint is the belief that those who live
and work within the school community should have increased decision-making authority over how a
school operates daily, particularly in the areas of curriculum and assessment; staffing and
governance; budget; and time. We believe that principals and school-based teams are best able to
respond to the varying needs of their students and lead improvements in achievement. "

Southwest staff and Leadership Council are exploring the options and opportunities of applying for Autonomous Status with the Minneapolis Public Schools.  The possibilities are to site determine time, staffing, curriculum and budget.  There are advantages and disadvantages.  The accountability is still an important part of the process.  Accountable to the community, district and state for student achievement.

If you are interested in being part of this process please email me at bsmith@mpls.k12.mn.us

The first writing meeting for intent to apply is October 14 7:30 -8:15 am in the Volunteer Center at school
