Mid-Term Ds and Fs Mailed This Morning

Mid-terms were mailed home this morning. The only families that will receive grades in the mail are those students earning a D or and an F at this time.

All the grades are visible on the Parent Portal. The grades should reflect the first 24 days of school. This is the mid point of the first quarter. Thus, student have all of the month of October to get back on track. The first quarter ends November 3.

If your son/daughter is failing a subject, a long coversation about study habits and time management are in order. You and your daughter/son might want to schedule an appointment with the teacher to review grades and demonsstration of academic skills in the class (or lack of).

This is a time to review what is happening and what might need to change. It is also a time to reward and congratulate your son/daughter about his/her fine progress up to the point in the year.

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is important. What is actually learned is more important but the grade frequently reflects that also. Talk with your children.

So why did we switch back to 4 quarter grades, instead of the 2 semester grades from last year? Just curious - as there was no information telling us about this switch.

Based on family feedback, the 18 week of a semester is too long. Students really get behind in such a long period. For the teachers, the four to five weeks seemed to be a reasonable length to support stduents and keep families informed. Many had not idea of the change.

So if a kid is truly lost (mine was skipped two grades and you "inherited" from FAIR Downtown) and she's truly struggling, but they keep advancing her. They think she's gifted but has a different learning style so she struggles.

If I ask HER what the options are for help she claims that there's not enough time after class to ask questions of the teacher for clarification because she has to rush to the next class.

What ARE the real options for kids to get help at SW? Maybe I can make some suggestions for her? :-)

Teachers are available before and after school. Most teachers posted this information in their classes, on their web site or emailed home. There is always a time to ask a question. Writing and math tutoring started last week. AS more is developed, that information will be on the weekly newsletter and the web site.

Have your (or you) talk to the teacher in the class where there are difficulties. I am sure that teacher has a support time.

Not yet. Still trying to figure out where she is at on things. Need to find that Parent Portal thing. She's in two houses (her dad's and mine) so I think he has the password. I need to be more involved this year though. She coasted for so long (that's why they skipped her twice) that I really didn't have to make an effort in pushing her. Learning new mom tricks. :-)

WE have numerous separated families at Southwest. The specific arrangements are individual to each family depends on the various agreements both informal and legal. In general the natural mother and father have rights to information. We provide pass words for the parent portal for both homes. Any parent requesting information needs to be listed on the official registration forms filed at the school. I suggest emailing me specific questions or contacting Ryan Moe about password - 612-220-9848.
