On Sunday, January 17th the Southwest High School Music Department will host a concert by the highly-acclaimed St. Olaf College Band.
The 3:30pm SW Auditorium performance will serve as a preview of the St. Olaf Band’s upcoming two-week tour of Japan.
Cost of admission is $8 for adults and seniors; $4 for students. Tickets are available in advance online at www.stolaftickets.com, or can be purchased at the door on the afternoon of the concert.
Because Southwest is hosting the concert, all Southwest Concert Band and Wind Ensemble students will have the opportunity to attend the concert free of charge! Concert attendance is expected for these students, as it will serve as not only an enjoyable listening experience, but a highly educational one as well. Students will earn extra credit/class points for their attendance at this event. Contact Mr. Liuzzi at 612/668-3089 or kliuzzi@mpls.k12.mn.us with any questions.
Established in 1891, the St. Olaf Band was the first musical organization at St. Olaf, a Minnesota college which is now internationally known for its excellence in music. The ensemble was the first American college musical organization to tour abroad, having traveled to Norway to perform in 1906. The 90-member band makes an annual tour of a portion of the Unites States, and has also performed in international venues such as England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, continental Europe and Mexico. The January 2010 tour of Japan will mark the band’s premiere appearance in Asia.
Under the direction of Dr. Timothy Mahr, the St. Olaf Band counts among its performing members Southwest Alumni Lauren Seidel (’07, oboe) and Eric Sayre (’06, trumpet). Eric also serves as the band’s current President. For more information about the St. Olaf Band or its upcoming Japanese tour, go to www.st.olaf.edu/music/stolaf_band.
