Big Week for Alpine

Wow, what a week!!!

It has been a big week for MAST. The combined teams are sending 12 skiers to the Alpine State Championships--more than at any other time in the team's history.

The qualifiers are led by the Southwest girls team which won its Section IV race for the second year in a row and earned a place at State back-to-back.

This inspirational team is a story of comebacks: Anika Hager--on skis less than a month since suffering a compression fracture in her back last fall and Molly Carolan--working back from a torn ACL in her knee exactly one year ago. They finished (5th and 9th respectively). Captain Andrea Savage also would have qualified as an individual, finishing 12th overall of 122 racers. Eleanor Goodnow finished 22nd overall, she's back from her own concussion one year ago. Senior Ellie Kirkpatrick (36th) and freshman Mackenna Savage (43rd) were also strong contributors and join the state team.

Washburn's Rachel Anderson had the highest individual girls finish placing third and qualifying for State individually.

Five MAST boys create the largest group of individual qualifiers and represent every high school. Morgan Shields (4th) from Southwest, Captain Matthew Polland (6th) Washburn, Ben Calvit (8th) Washburn, Captain George Thome (11th) South, and Christian Hedrick (13th) Southwest fill out our strong contingent.

No team has more qualifiers than MAST's representatives.

Besides the SW girls winning the section, the Washburn girls finished 7th and South 21st...the SW boys finished third--just missing qualifying as a team as the top two schools make it to state. The Washburn and South boys finished 9th and 11th, respectively. So many of you skied well under the pressure.

The complete results are on the website.

The level of success of these skiers is tied directly to the high level of competition on Hyland's training courses every night.

Congratulations to the state qualifiers and Good Luck on Wednesday at Giants Ridge!
