Public Input Requested

Dear MPS Partners and Friends,

In the next few months the Minneapolis Board of Education will begin discussing goals and principles for labor contract negotiations for the school district’s 12 labor unions. In the past this conversation was held among board members, the superintendent and her leadership team.

Last night for the first time we had the opportunity to hear from the public about their priorities moving forward. We would like to thank the students, parents, community stakeholders, teachers and other staff members who came to the public hearing to show their support for the education of Minneapolis students. We appreciate that so many have taken an interest in supporting student achievement in our great city.

It is clear that Minneapolis residents understand the importance of participating in this conversation. This board highly values community engagement and we feel lucky to be able to hear from the public. We are a public organization that needs to be accountable to our internal and external stakeholders, which is why we look forward to hearing more from them at future engagement hearings and events.

If you were unable to attend the board hearing, you are encouraged to provide a comment or delegation to the school board about topics that concern you – even if they are not on the agenda for that day. Other opportunities like Soup with the Supe give you the opportunity to ask questions directly of the superintendent. The next Soup with the Supe events are planned for 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, at Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Ave. S.; and 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, at Sabathani Community Center, 310 East 38th St.

Even if you are unable to meet with us in person, we encourage you to reach out to us. Allboard members and the superintendent are accessible by email and phone. We take the time to read and consider the concerns of our community when making decisions.

Thank you again for taking the time to call, write and meet with us. With your help, we can provide all of our students with the support they need to reach their academic goals.

Sincerely,

Bernadeia H. Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Alberto Monserrate
Chair, Minneapolis Board of Education
