Southwest Lakers Win 2013 MN State Table Tennis Consolation Title

The Southwest Lakers won the consolation title of the 2013 MN State Table Tennis Tournament on February 10, 2013, at Eagan High School. After competing in a 4-team preliminary round, the Lakers won three close matches—8-6 versus Cretin Derham Hall, 8-7 against Orono, and 8-6 over Lakeville North.

Senior captains Dan Black and Charlie Aubart won the deciding doubles match against Orono to put the Lakers in the consolation final. In the finals, the Lakers led Lakeville North 6-4 after singles. Senior Vince Puzak and his 8th grade brother, Will Puzak, won in doubles for the seventh point and juniors Ben Eccles and Carl Vaughn clinched the consolation title by winning their doubles match. Other team members playing in the tournament included seniors Dan Mejia, Jacob Rosenbaum, Peter Schroedl, Ben Kurschner, and Patrick Conlon-Kvale.

Southwest’s team featured one baseball player, 4 tennis players, and 6 soccer players. They competed against players who developed their skills in their school’s racquet sports gym classes. At many schools, 40-100 players vied to play on their school’s 10-member coed team. Seventeen teams competed in the 2013 tournament. The Lakers will lose 8 seniors to graduation. They are looking forward to adding new players and competing in next year’s state tournament.
