Homecoming 2010 comes to a close

Well, the dance is done, the royalty crowned and all the various sports events finished. That is a wrap for homecoming 2010.

The dance was attended by about 1,100 at the International Market Square. Beautiful place for a dance or reception or whatever. Kids were delightful. I think they had a good time.

It is a fashion show. The 9th graders arrive first and some as early as 6 for a 7:00 start. It almost is a structured entry. The lower grades first and seniors start arriving around 8. The alternate theme this year must have been circus performers or Halloween gone bad. So you have the fancy dresses, suits and ties and then tightrope walker outfits. Nice mixture. A fair number of of female students decide to go with slightly long shirts. At least that is what I am guessing they were. So the majority of the night was spent pulling the top up and the bottom down. As you might expect those two actions really work against one another. But maybe I am getting old.

The dancing -from my point of view - is standing in the middle of a crowded area and jump up and down. I think, but not certain, that the hope is that once in a while you bump up against another human. They appear tom have fun so I guess that works.

In general, the main part of the dance is between 8 and 9. After 9 I think they get bored and tire to find ways to continue. The wandering around get larger as more are trying to fill the evening. At 10 a huge cheer and the mandatory scream for one more rises to the skies. For the next two hours, children wait for their family members to remember to pick them up.

Memories, new stories and a fun week is now part of the experience. Over all is was a good week. We will talk it over and check with the kids to try and improve next year.
